Tips to Make a DIY Computer

| September 3, 2011

DIY computer is short term of Do It Yourself computer. Some people may choose branded PCs, like Dell, Mac, IBM or others. Some others prefer DIY computer because it is cheaper and you can use your desired specifications and peripherals. Sometimes there is a certain satisfaction when we can build DIY computer too.

Before you decide to start building a DIY computer, you should make some notes about what will be purchased to build your DIY computer.

I have some tips for you, if you want to build your DIY computer.

1.How much money you will spend to build a DIY computer.
You must determine how much money will be spent to build your DIY computer. Do not be too stingy and not too wasteful also. You have to have max price of peripherals that you will use so that you do not exceed the budget.

There are three things to consider before determining how much money will be spent to buy a new PC.
a. Do not consider buying a PC is an investment. There are only a few PC components or peripherals that it’s not outdated within 6 months. Therefore, the components to be purchased would be quickly dropped.
b. Not too much thinking about disadvantage when buying a PC. If the reason is the price will drop in 6 months later, then you will never have a PC. Is not right?
c. Do not think to repay the purchase of components. Preferably, save your money and when it is sufficient, then you can start buying a PC or build DIY computer.

2. Make a “whist list”
You will use the computer for what kind of purpose? It is necessary to know what kind of peripherals that you will use. Do not rush to buy a component because the price was falling.
Create a sequence of activities that are going to do with the PC. Write from highest to lowest priority. You should also add some stuffs base on your need. For example, if you want your computer more durable, it is necessary to buy an UPS for it.

3. Choose peripherals that will be used
after determine the amount of money and the adding stuffs; you can start to select components or peripherals that will be used in your DIY computer. The main components of a computer or PC are:
Processor
Motherboard
Memory (RAM)
Hard disk drives
Graphic card (if not integrated with the motherboard)
• Casing
• Power supply
• Keyboard
• Mouse
• Monitor
• Sound card (if not integrated with the motherboard)

There are several additional components, such as:
• Modems
• DVD ROM
• Speaker
• Ethernet card
• Game pad or joystick (if you’re going to build a PC for gaming)
• Raid card
• Printer
• Scanner
• Stabilizer power (if you have a problem with an electrical voltage)
• UPS

4. Make a shopping list
to find peripherals to be purchased; the first step is look at your needs. Select the components that support your needs. Therefore, I recommend you make a whist list. Shop according to the whist list you have created.
The main components of the above must be purchased, because they must exist if you want to build a PC. You can’t run your PC without one of it. Without the casing may be you can build and run your PC, but your PC is very vulnerable.
Unfortunately, there is no fast way to find out which one are most appropriate peripherals. You must do research to find out. Do not just record to one brand only. Write down all the brands that can be obtained along with its variants. You can be more flexible in determining your choice later.

5. Go to the computer store
after making a shopping list, and then it’s time to go to the computer store to check the price and the existing stock. You have to find the price components in accordance with the money which you have prepared. While noting the price, you’re also asking the guarantees and the technical support too. You have to note about the upgrading capability, support and driver software’s, and if possible a personal opinion from people who have tried it, but do not be tempted by sales talk too much. The decision to buy or not is in your own hands. The important thing to do now is gather as much data as possible.

6. Calculate the price and make a conclusion
after you get all of components price that you want, and then start by write down the price into your list. Match the amount of money that you have prepared. If it is too expensive, you should first determine which peripherals are to be replaced. To eliminate the component, use your whist list you have created. If there are components which are not essential in the support list, you must set aside. You can buy it next time if you have the money already.

Happy shopping and build your own DIY computer.

When things go wrong, you can troubleshoot it and understand what’s happening. Many people just know their PC is “that beige tower” and not much more.

  32. These are great tips, I always prefer DIY than build-in computers since I’m the one who will make the specifications whether for office use or game use. With DIY also I can choose what parts where in or not, like I don’t want to buy VC (on a budget cut) I can go with mobo with video card built-in.
