How to Install New Motherboard into the PC Casing

| July 30, 2011

It is not difficult to install a motherboard or replace the old one with the new motherboard into PC casing. You should not be an expert to do it. Noteworthy is meticulous and a good understanding of the installation manual included in the package. A set of screwdrivers, pliers, a little bit patience and thoroughness as well as, a glass of hot coffee, snacks and a pack of cigarettes (if you smoke) to reduce a little stress when there is an error. (Just kidding).

Un-Install Old Motherboard

The initial steps must be taken if you want to install a motherboard:
• Unplug all electrical connections that connect the PC
• Open the cover of PC
• Remove all the screws are mounted on the side of the card casing or I / O shield (Ethernet card, sound card, graphic card, etc) and all attached cables ( hard disk and CD ROM maybe)
• Remove all contacts of plate in the casing.
• Make the necessary records of all things (jumper position, the position of the cable) to avoid mistakes that can occur.

After all that you do so, the old motherboards can begin to be removed. On some PCs, plates to put the motherboard can be removed by removing screws or push it backward. A motherboard itself can be removed from the casing after removing the retaining the spacing screws.

Install New Motherboard

I assume you’ve finished removing the old motherboard and you are ready to install a motherboard you just bought.
• Remove all cards devices from the old motherboard and make sure which card that still fit and you can use again.
• Configure the location of the jumper, clock dividers and power supply to a motherboard according to the instructions manual book.
• Install a new processor or your old processor if it still fit with the processor socket on the motherboard. This is the hardest part if you want to install a motherboard’s devices. It is not impossible that your processor will be damaged, if you mistakenly put it. So be careful. For the old processor with a socket A (AMD) or Socket 478 (Intel) takes a screwdriver to remove heat sink on the motherboard body. As for the new processors with socket LGA (Intel) or socket 939 (AMD), you simply open the hook on the heat sink.
• Install new or your old memory (RAM) on the motherboard socket. If you use dual channel memory, make sure the installation accordingly. (It indicated with the same color usually). For more details, adjust to the motherboard’s manual.
• Steps in installing hardware devices as opposed to when to take it off, so you must remember it well. Installation of all cards should be done while your new motherboard still is outside the casing, so that you can put it more freely.
• Check the screws with the screw holes. Make sure the screws are reinstalled is appropriate.
• Make sure the part will have mechanical loads (below the slots) have spacing screw.
• Plug in the power supply cable connector into a motherboard. (On the ATX format there is only one set, so it can be plugged directly). Therefore, pairs all the power connectors that are applicable to that contained in a motherboard, you should never combine the two into a single power connector, because it can cause fatal damage.
• Plug in the other connector wires that connect a motherboard to the hard disk, CD / DVD / Blue Ray ROM drive, USB ports and other enhancements in accordance with your PC.

If you think that you have the right steps according to the manuals and some notes you have created, then you can start trying to turn on your PC.
If it runs as your expectation, then close the PC back and you can start enjoying your new PC.
Good luck.

Very useful post for users want to install motherboard. It is really important to see the manual before you try. This is applicable to all situations of course about computers. I’ve been doing hardware troubleshooting but I’ve never had experience replacing a motherboard. Well, Thanks for sharing!

  8. Very detailed description, you will have saved someone a lot of time by mentioning configuring the jumper.

The first computer I built, I left it on the factory setting because I hadn’t read the manual properly, and took me ages to sort out why there was no activity whatsoever from my computer.

I wish Id read this a couple of years ago lol. I damaged a powr supply, a motherboard and put the fan on the wrong way round. My local PC shop was shocked I had tried to mount the motherboard directly on to the case instead of mounting screws

  22. I recently had to install a new motherboard, but I didn’t have a helpful list like this to assist me! I wish I had, because it was one of those “trial and error” situations with a few more errors than I would have liked, but I managed to get it done in the end! Still, I think I’ll keep this for the future – just in case. :)

      @ Sandy
It takes a little guts if we want to disassemble or “break up” computer. Once you can do it with some “trial and error” test then the next will be easier. Well done for you.
