I went from an Alexa ranking of 5,7 million in April to under 150K in May. Recently I haven’t been good about visiting blogs and commenting only to see my ranking increase by 10K, lesson learned. Best way to up the rank is to get more traffic to your site. There are many ways to do this but don’t spam. Great article. Also knowing how to hunt for keywords related to your site. Google adwords has a nice tool to find keywords.

I started my blog a few months ago and was focused on building content. I have content now but it is hard to get backlinks to the blog. I have an ecommerce website and it is 5 times easier to get a link on my website than my blog. I am not sure how the Alexa toolbar will help but I will give it a try. I will definitely register with Alexa.
If you want more backlinks, you should set your blog to do follow and make sure you get quality backlink that is relevant to your blog and has good google PR.

I have found traffic is pretty much the most important thing to improve your rank, accordingly your Alexa rank is primarily calculated from both the Alexa toolbar and Google Chrome and Firefox sidebars but Alexa now say they take into account ‘other sources’. I would say surfers with the toolbar are still the most important factor in the ranking system.
