| June 17, 2011

Do you have a relative or neighbor who is blind? What do you think about them? Do you feel if you cannot see something beautiful is so sad? Maybe you would feel if you like losing something very valuable to your life. You cannot walk in the morning watching beautiful girls with sexy clothes. You cannot browse the Internet comfortably. So what if you suddenly become like them?
Well, I do not intend to lower the value of life of blind people. There are many people who have great achievements in this world with all their limitations. I’m just trying to describe how it feels when you are in their positions.
Maybe you will ask me, what does the intent of my writing this. What was just outpouring of the heart or just to ask for a little attention to the blind. Yes, I want to give some tips to you about how to keep people blind can still enjoy the Internet world. These tips are specifically for the Mozilla Firefox browser version 4, surely there must be a companion for them to assist this process to run smoothly. Here are tips about browser for blind:

1.   Download and install a free application called Firefox Booster. With this application, users can tweak the speed of the browser, which in essence can also be done manually by typing about: config in the address bar. Choose the speed set in accordance with the connection being used.

2.   Get rid of search bars and toolbars that are not necessary. Run your browser, and click View and select Toolbars. Leave (tick as appropriate) on the Menu Bar and the Navigation Toolbar, then select customize and remove items that do not need (search bar), because these items can interfere with visual impairments when navigating.

3.    Try to uninstall extensions, plugins and other components associated with visual, because visually impaired users will not use it and of course access the browser will increase. In other words, minimizing the required extensions.

4.    Install several extensions are needed for the blind.

*  Webvisum: This extension is very helpful for blinds. It will help them to input CAPCHA which is usually a picture, so with this extension, they do not need to call a sighted person to help enter the CAPTCHA code. It can optimize the page loading too and could also be used to disable images. There is “click sound” that will let blind people know when the page has been perfectly open.

* Status-4-Evar: It will help blind people to find out the status of the current page. In Firefox 4 browser status bar which is usually located at the bottom of the browser have been eliminated, but with theis extension, this status bar can be restored.

* NoScript: It can block scripts that need not be loaded, so they can more freely determine which scripts need to be loaded or not.

* AdBlock Plus: It blocks pop-ups or ads that are roaming on the internet. Once installed, just subscribe to Easy list to identify the existing ads.

I hope these tips can help blind people to browse the net smoothly.

I’m not sure how most of this will help a blind user – I mean, a user absolutely blind (as opposed to partial blindness, obscured vision, cataracts, etc). Though the voice plugin a user mentioned sounds like it will be/is a great breakthrough.

Right now there are tablets you can use to draw on the computer. I wonder if they could be altered to change surface texture (to read as braille) on a webpage? It would still be incredibly difficult to navigate (i.e. click here wouldn’t be relevant, and touch screen tablets would be rendered pointless given the user would have to touch the screen all over just to read the braille)

  9. Firefox is my favorite browser. It has got several features. I hate all including chrome…

  10. Zapatos Andrea says:

I read somewhere that Google is going to launch a search by voice function: very helpful for blind people. It would be great if someone invent a device to “translate” web pages into braille.

  11. I don’t really get your point in this post. In the first place, blind people won’t be able to see the browser so how can these plugins help see what’s happening ohttp://abmachinereviews.org/n their monitors?

you have to know that most browser is build for ordinary people. We can’t limit the blind to get more information on the net. So, the basic tab on it will be changed by these plugins to voice in order to help them. I think for ordinary people, it hard to imagine it, but for the blind who often to use it for browse the net, they are really helpful. It’s more cheaper than hire someone to accompany them, if they want surf the net.

  12. This can indeed help the blind people. :) Firefox is such a good company finding a way on how our disabled brothers and sisters can have an access to Internet. :)

  13. These are great. My 2nd cousin is blind and was afraid that he wouldn’t be able to do some “normal” things. This will help him feel independent. Thanks for the tutorial.
