Blog Pagerank! Google PageRank Vs Alexa Rank

| July 28, 2011

How do you know how popular your blog is? You can use Alexa Rank and Google PageRank to measure and know your blog pagerank. All blogs in the internet are competing to get a good rank in the eyes of Google and Alexa. Google page rank is using numbers from 0 to 10. The higher the Google page ranks the better the value of our blog as well. While Alexa opposite, the smaller the value of Alexa rank, then the value of your blogs are also becoming more popular.

What criteria are needed so that the Google and Alexa measure your blog pagerank?

Google PageRank
Google give pagerank to a blog or website base on to:
• Quality and originality of content
If you just copy and paste to fill the content in your blog, then certainly your blog pagerank will be low. It may even been de-indexed or get “sandbox” by Google (Many AGC sites been de-indexed or sandboxed by Google). So, you have to start to create unique and original contents right now.
• The number of quality backlinks
You probably already know about Google Panda. Google’s new algorithm will assess the quality of backlinks on every blog and website. If a blog or website apply links farmer, so it will de-indexed and get “sandbox” by Google as well. Panda assess 20 quality backlinks is better than 100 “garbage” backlinks. A quality backlink is a backlink that obtained from other blogs or websites that have a high PR that have the same relevance. If your blog discusses about affiliate marketing, then look for backlinks from blogs with similar topics that have a high PR.
• The Frequency of blogs and websites updates.
Google also likes the blog that is updated regularly. Try to make regular updates, if you want to have a high PR. If you do not believe it, you can try to update your blog content once a year; it would immediately drop your blog pagerank.

To be able to increase Google PageRank, you need learn about Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Create content with keywords that fit with the blog topic and try to have a density of 3-7%. You should also use Meta keywords, title tags and content that suits your content. This can make your content get a good SERP. For WordPress users, there are many plugins that you can use for SEO purposes (WordPress SEO by Yoast is one of them and I use it too). Create Google sitemap and submit it to Google. (Use Google sitemap plugin to make it easier)

Google Page rank is not influenced by the number of visits or unique visitor. So a higher blog  pagerank will still be given to a blog according to the above criteria, although the traffic blog is not good enough.
Paid to Blogging sites (SponsorReview, Smorthy, etc) use this blog pagerank as a benchmark to determine the price per post. The higher blog pagerank, the more expensive the price reviews of the blog.

Alexa Rank
Alexa Rank use numbers from 1 to infinity. Alexa assess traffic rank is based solely on number of visit to the blog. It means more traffic will make your blog pagerank according to Alexa Rank is lower.
PPC programs (Google Adsense, Bidvertiser etc) are very suitable to be applied on a blog with good Alexa Rank. The ads in your blog will have more possibility to click if you have ton traffic. Alexa Rank has no effect with Google Page Rank.

Alexa Rank cannot be used as a benchmark for sure, but the blogs and websites with Alexa Rank below 100,000 typically have high traffic.

How to increase Alexa Rank?
You can see it in my post about how to increase Alexa Rank. In addition, participate and active in the forums that typically install the Alexa toolbar and add your signature there.

My alexa pagerank is not accurate. Maybe it has something to do with traffic from the netherlands? My blog http://www.blaffert.net is dutch. I have 2000 visits a day. Maybe thats not enough?

  2. Csapágy says:

    Thanks for sharing valuable infos!

  3. Another site metrics that is important that I think each website owner must begin to measure aside from PR and Alexa Rank is Page Authority and trust. The new Google panda update is programmed to identify how well can your pages be trusted and how well it will serve your visitors.

  4. web design says:

Blog PR is really important on our blog. Another important thing is gaining more traffic on our blog. Both ranking and traffic are really important on our site. Thanks for your post, this explains and will help other bloggers like us. :)

  5. Tilbud says:

Thanks, i like this article, but must say that I don’t no must about Alexa – maybe I have too learn more about it.

  6. Dura says:

  7. Wisdom says:

Nice info but i really didn’t focus on both google pagerank and alexa rank.

  8. Matt says:

Thanks for this outline. Just re page rank: I do think that people get a bit hung up on this measure of website quality. And it seems to have little to do with the actual amount of traffic you end up getting. Some low page rank blogs get massive hordes of visitors, after all.

Still it’s worth keeping an eye on. If your PR is slowly rising then that’s confirmation you’re doing the right thing in the eyes of Google, which is good to know.

  9. Agus says:

I Love your blogs, much information for beginner like me. Now, i know the function of google pagerank and alexa. Thanks bro, keep action & success for you

    • Andy C says:

      @Agus
I just came to your blog. You have new blog that actually have wonderful contents and very simple lay out. I don’t know why you choose it, but it’s ok, because it can speed up page loading time. Perhaps you have to add another page like about me so that your visitors more familiar with you.

  10. Good information about blog rankings on the Net. My only question is: how Google and Alexa rank blogs? What is the equivalent of Page Rank 5 to an Alexa ranking. I assume PR 5 is close to 100,000 Alexa rank. But I’m not really sure.

  11. Ahmet says:

    Beautiful sharing, thank you:)

  12. It’s just the difference between quality and the percentage … PageRank simply refers to your page to be in the specificity and Alexa rank means the entire row …

  13. Thanks for sharing such a useful post man.

  14. Bill says:

Thanks for the info. I just started my first site and this has been very helpful in clearing some things up.

  15. Zac says:

Excellent article, I’ve been curious as to which is better. Thanks

  16. yes, this is true that Google loves updated fresh blogs & sites and keeps up in ranking. But in my eyes Google page rank is much bigger parameter than Alexa rank. It doesn’t mean I don’t like Alexa rank but google is on upper hand. The information you shared in this post is gr8 and very useful for all.

  17. fun blogger says:

Google has a page rank update today and mine just got froom pr2 to pr3

  18. Though there is a lots of confusion between alexa rank and google page rank. Which one is better?? To whom we can trust for better business.

  19. Nice blog this is one of the most informative article for me keep sharing this type of post

  20. Jimmy says:

Thinks for the informative article. I’m curious, however, since your site is seemingly quite popular and obviously informative why is it that you have a pr of 0?

    I can’t quite understand it.

    • Andy C says:

      @Jimmy
Thanks for your attention about my blog. My blog and my domain name is very new. It’s about 3 months old. I want to build a blog from zero ( even i can build it from old domain name). I want to enjoy the process of it. It’s just like back to the old time for me. So here it is.

  21. This is one of the best informative post for me. And you have given nice presentation over this blog. This information is useful for me.
Thanks so much for this! This is exactly what I was looking for.

  22. Aviators says:

a very interesting article! thank you

  23. drawul says:

    Im not speak english :D

  24. SamaraJames says:

Hi, its a great sensitive issue…. some rely on Google page rank and some on Alexa. Some like page rank 4 -5 even Alexa >5000K…… and some prefer Alexa<100K even PR0. Anyhow nice informative post.

  25. Ricardus says:

Alexa is the amount of traffic and Google PR is how the website ranks

  26. Pushpendra says:

But I Prefers Google PR over Alexa’s…:)

  27. Aija says:

Isn’t google rank and alexa rank the same? I didn’t know that

  28. While it’s always good to have an idea of where your blog stands, I try and avoid mulling over my Alexa rank, or PageRank. You can’t assess the success of a site numerically – it will be seen by the quality of the content and the interaction of your readers.

  29. Google PR and Alexa are two important indicators on how your site is currently performing. But I think, Google PR is what’s mostly used as the baseline if your blog or site is working well. :)

    • Andy C says:

      @Aurea
Google page rank is the first measurement to know about how good our site is. But Google page rank is not very frequently updated, so we need to have another measurement that frequently updated. Here it comes Alexa rank. Many pay per post sites right now use this alexa rank to determine the site value.

  30. Jobs says:

Google ranking is more important then Alexa ranking. Yes the points you have written above are the need of better Page rank.

  31. If I am asked to weigh which one is more important, I’d say both for different reasons.

Google Page Rank is about your site’s relevance in the blogosphere and is being subjected to calculations involving quality backlinks. The higher your PR, the more reliable your site is. This is important for those with businesses relating to consultancy, services, and others that need trust from customers.

Alexa Page Rank is all about traffic. It’s calculation is based on pageviews. The more massive traffic you have, the lower your rank (lower is better). This is important for those sites who are making money using products or advertisements.

    • Andy C says:

      @Ramcel
You got the point. I do agree with your opinions. We need both of them to measure our sites for different reasons. If we talk about Google PR then it must about quality site, and if alexa rank is just solely about sites traffic.

  32. bodynsoil says:

I was very happy to see my pagerank at three when I first found out and check my ranking. I certainly hope to see that number continue to rise over time. Great post with lots of helpful information on how to get pagerankings to rise.

Regarding my Alexa ranking, I went from 5,7 million in April to under 150K in May. Recently I haven’t been good about visiting blogs and commenting only to see my ranking increase by 10K, lesson learned. I am not working to get my number back down to under 150K and hopefully I will soon hit the under 100K benchmark myself. Off now to read your sister post on Alexa ranking.

  33. Aqmal says:

wow,, that’s right there are some big sites like alexa google yahoo that have a rank for our blog.. :) The big 3 srank sites.. :) Please visit back..

  34. Google Page Rank is the most important because if you have a higher page rank the you site has some authority and then it requires less time than usual for ranking of any new post.

  35. ferdian says:

all they that determine traffic website i lke your post keeped grow tour blog thank’s

  36. i like your article. Blog Pagerank is very important. thanks.

  37. Ferdinand says:

This is article gives very detailed information about page ranks of Google and Alexa. Keep giving such vital pieces of information makes understanding the basics of ranking.

  38. You know, I just recently learned about PR and Alexa rankings, and I was honestly still a little bit confused about what each one was and the difference between the two of them. This post cleared a lot of that up, really informative!! Thank you :)
